Some of the things we do

Our congregation tries to thoughtfully consider
the neighbourhood, the city,
and the wider world - with God’s leading -
with joy in a humble and obedient way.
And whatever you do, in word or deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:17

Day of Prayer

A couple times a year, we gather in quiet on a Saturday morning to listen for God’s leading, and we share what we are thinking and feeling with one another. It’s meaningful.

Out of one of these days of prayer, our church initiated a new out-reach group called One Little Thing.
It’s still happening.

One Little Thing

Since January 2024, it’s OLT’s habit to drive around our church’s neighbourhood to deliver lunches each Wednesday to folk on street corners, those living rough, some living in vehicles.

Imagine how nice it is to hear your name spoken aloud with an outstretched hand giving you a meal, or, a Timmy card to get out of the cold for a bit.

It goes like this: everyone in our church is invited to donate one little thing like a $5.Tim card, or a baking item to a group who prepares healthy, bag-lunches. A postcard inspirational note is in the bag as well: some of our friends keep collecting them, week by week for encouragement. There are sandwiches of homemade bread slices /buns /wraps with quality meat, cheese, and lettuce, plus homemade cookies, fresh fruit and a snack of veggies, plus a protein bar.

It’s one little thing, giving a meal, that is in truth a big taste of Kingdom kindness to our friends in need.

We also regularly support
Neighbour to Neighbour
as the only food bank on the mountain.
Why? because the Bible is clear:

“Remember the poor.”

Anytime, you can bring in food items, like canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, rice, lentils - anything that has a shelf-life and is useful to regular families.

Heads up:
there’s a food drive for N2N happening in February.

SOCKS Canada - KENYA

was founded in 2005 following many visits to Kenya by Hamilton area volunteers.
THE AIM: to assist and care for vulnerable children by helping provide shelter, food, clothing, education, and medical care.
Representatives from the group raise awareness about SOCKS by visiting schools, churches, and service clubs in order to actively fundraise to support projects in Kenya, Africa. The projects include: enhancing school experiences, providing sanitary napkins, and supporting sustainable gardens.

A few of the founders attend St John Church.

Dr Rodney serves in Haiti

Doctor Rodney and his wife had a great time reconnecting with supporters in Canada this past November. They were able to share some encouraging stories of what God is doing in the medical clinic in Haiti.

A special thank you to the small groups and churches - including St. John - who hosted the couple, drove them around, and provided wonderful hospitality in their homes.

Haiti

Prayer requests

  • Pray for the overall situation in Haiti - for the gangs to be defeated and a functioning government to be elected.

  • Pray for the ongoing funding problem for the HIV/AIDS clinic. We are now on a short term contract with funding reduced to 40% of the original budget.

  • Pray that we would have the medical supplies, equipment and medicine needed to treat patients everyday.

  • Pray that God will continue to work to transform bodies and souls as people come to Bethesda for help and healing.

SEW & SEWS
  Quilt Sunday

Over 400 quilts were on display the end of November in our sanctuary. We do this every year.

Since the fall of 2009, this beautiful group of women have created over 5,000 quilts to give away as a “fabric hug” to folk who are aged or unwell.
If you are interested in joining this group of quilters, let us know. They meet every Wednesday 12:30-3:00 and one Saturday a month. They will teach you as a beginner, or welcome you as an experienced sewist.

Call the church office if you’re interested.

The Fix-it
Wednesday group

Every Wednesday morning, a group of faithful men meet at the church to putter around and repair things and paint and organize areas of the church. If you are retired and like tools and want to make new friends, this might be the perfect group for you to join. They always have a tea-and-sweets visit after the working time.

If you live in Hamilton (or nearby), and want to try this church experience with us, that would be awesome.

The service starts at 10:00 AM, and ends around 11:00 / 11:15 AM - depending on the Sunday.

During church, we watch a short inspirational video on our big screen;  our Praise Team leads us in singing contemporary songs mixed with hymns;  there is a 15 to 20-minute sermon;  we pray; then, we end our time by enjoying a hot drink and sweets in the cafe.

It’s so good to chat together, a privilege really, being in-person.
